What Makes a Very Different Kind of Private High School?

What makes Blyth-Templeton Academy different from other high schools? This is a question we frequently hear from families who are looking for the right private high school for their teens. We offer many ways for you to see for yourselves - weekly information sessions, open houses, scheduled visits - what makes our approach to education at BTA exceptional.

Blyth-Templeton Academy is different than other high schools in several ways. Here are a few:

Micro School. We are intentionally small – we will keep our enrollment below 150 students and our average class size is eight. We limit class size to provide an environment where students and teachers know each other well and can deeply probe the course content together.  In these small classes every student is known and expected to engage every day.

Block Schedule. We have a unique schedule in which students take two classes a day per quarter. This allows students to deeply engage with the subjects they’re studying. Instead of jumping from class-to-class in 45-minute increments, students spend 2 hours and 20 minutes each day to explore each subject.

Experiential Learning. We take hands-on learning seriously and use the city’s vast resources to deepen our understanding of the world and the subjects we’re studying. Our goal is that students walk away from these experiences with a deeper understanding of the world around them, a desire to be a member and contributor to their communities, and independent, confident learners.

Service Learning. Students at Blyth-Templeton engage in projects that help serve our community. Whether it’s building garden beds, growing vegetables, or tutoring neighborhood students, we are continually exploring ways to get involved and make a difference.  Each student also has an individual service learning requirement.

Low Tuition. We believe that high quality education should be available for everyone. With tuition under $15,000 for the full academic year for families who register by January 31st, students can get a unique education that prepares them more for the real world than most sit-at-a-desk-and-listen schools.

“What we’re doing here seems “new,” but in many ways it’s far from new. We’ve created a school based on what we know works: learning by doing, strong student-teacher relationships, and deeper learning that is connected to our students’ lives.”  Lee Palmer, Head of School
